The Sara Umga Pass Trek is one of the most challenging treks in Himachal Pradesh. This 8-day trek takes you through the enchanting valleys of Parvati and provides you with enough thrill to last a lifetime!
The dramatic variation in landscapes, the rugged terrains, and the spectacular views – everything about this 5000 m high trek is simply brilliant!
While not a beginner’s cup of tea, one of the best features of this trek is that it is seldom taken up by most! So if you are a seasoned trekker, who loves solitude and peace away from the crowded hustle and bustle, this trek is the perfect pick for you!
The heavy showers of the monsoon and the thick blanket of snow in winter render this trail inaccessible, so the best time to plan this trek is between summer and autumn!
Manikaran, Himachal Pradesh
8 A.M.
Altitude: 1,830m (6,000ft)
Our Sara Umga Pass trek begins at the isolated town of Manikaran in the Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh.
The first day of the trek will be peaceful and relaxing. We will take time to acclimatize to our surroundings and get used to the high altitude of 1830 m.
You can use your time however you wish! Take a stroll along the Parvati Valley, discover the vibrant markets, and get some unique local souvenirs!
We will spend the night in a guest house.
Distance:
Time Taken: 4-5 Hours
Altitude: 3,000 m (9,850 ft)
For our second day, we will start early. There will be a lot of walking involved today, so ensure you are hydrated!
First, we will hit the road and make our way to Tosh village. The drive will be about 45 mins long, following which we will take time out for a brief acclimatization in and around the village.
Now, the walking begins! The trek to Budhaban is an easy one. The climb is gentle, and you will be met with lush greenery, snow-capped peaks, and rich, exotic alpine flora and fauna.
Budhaban is blessed with expanding meadows, making it the perfect spot to camp for the night!
Distance:
Time Taken: 6-7 hours
Altitude: 3,505 m (11,500 ft)
On the 3rd day, the trek’s difficulty starts to set in. So keep in mind to be sure-footed and steady with every step!
As we make our way from the Budhaban to the snout of the glacier, the path, riddled with steep slopes and uneven terrain, is sure to make you break a sweat (even at sub-zero temperatures!).
When the bright and vibrant green valleys fade into dry, rocky stretches of land, you will know you are getting closer and closer to the snout!
After some excruciating hours, we will make it to the high-altitude meadow of Sharam Thatch!
Distance:
Time Taken: 4-5 hours
Altitude: 3,800 m (12,500 ft)
As the sun rises, we will venture to get even closer to our final destination, announcing a new day!
A few miles from the Sharam Thatch, trekking alongside the raging Tosh river, we will reach our destination for the day, Shamsi Thatch. A beautiful valley with the Tosh glacier on its north and the Kullu Makalu peak and its glacier in the southeast.
Distance:
Time Taken: 4-6 Hours
Altitude: 4,100 m (13,500 ft.)
We will keep following the trail leading to the snout of the Tosh glacier and then continue up the glacier through scree and glacial moraines to the beautiful campsite of Kuta Thatch just below the Sara Umga Pass.
Time Taken: 7-8 Hours
Sara Umga Pass Altitude: 4,700 Hours (15,500 ft)
Putiruni Altitude: 3,800 m (12,500 ft)
After some much-needed rest, the day we have all been looking forward to is finally here! Excitement is at an all-time high as the time has come to witness the ethereal beauty of the Sara Umga Pass!
But be warned! The climb to the pass will be as tricky as exciting!
We will start early because we have to cross the pass before noon! While the climb is not the longest, it is highly demanding!
You will feel your limbs weakening after only a few steps into the deep snow, but don’t give up! Only a few more hours, don’t let fear come in between you and the glorious pass!
After about 7 -8 hours of a physical and mental rollercoaster, we are finally at the top of the pass!
You might find yourself dumbfounded by the sheer beauty in front of you! After all those laborious efforts, your heart will now be at ease, and you will feel like a free bird, soaring higher and higher!
The panoramic view of the Tosh and Lahaul Valley is nothing short of ‘picture-perfect.’
Once you have soaked in the beauty of the Pass in all its glory, it’s time to descend!
The way down is just as spellbinding as the way up! We will descend until we reach the dainty little spot of Putiruni!
We walk along the mesmerizing river of Chandra! That is not all!
You will also glance at the Chandra Bhaga ranges and the magnanimous Bara Shigri Glacier, the largest glacier in Himachal Pradesh!
On reaching Putiruni, our long, tiring, lovely day will end!
Distance:
Time Taken: 6-7 Hours
Altitude: 3,700 m (12,150 ft)
On day 6, we will trek from Putiruni to Chhota Dhara. This will be yet another long day but comparatively gradual.
Chhota Dhara is located on the roadside and has good connectivity to Manali and Keylong.
Distance:
Time Taken: 8 Hours
Altitude: 2,050 m (6,750 ft)
Our incredible, magical, enchanting adventure has finally come to an end!
You might be overcome with bittersweet feelings, but the satisfying feeling of traversing such a challenging trek will remain fresh in your mind for a long time and keep you company when the post-vacation blues kick in!
