Miyar Valley Trek

Miyar Valley Trek

  • 8 Days
  • Group : 8-15 People
  • Guided Trek
  • Moderate Trek
  • Start: Manali
  • Altitude
    Altitude : 14,599 ft

The Miyar valley is a pristine and unexplored valley in the Lahaul region, home to beautiful flowers and stunning landscapes. This valley is often overlooked by trekkers and tourists eager to explore more popular destinations in the area. However, those who venture off the beaten path will be rewarded with an incredible experience that cannot be found anywhere else.

The trek is about 58 km in the long and winding S-shape between Zanskar and Chamba.

Covering a massive distance of nearly 100 kilometres, the Miyar River runs into the Chandra Bhaga River at Udaipur. The glacier is almost 36 kilometres long, all the way to Kang La (17,600 feet) and beyond into the Zanskar Valley.

What’s interesting is that a narrow gorge near the bottom of the valley is home to 12 little farming villages. All lie between 9,300 and 11,500 feet, with about 3,000 current inhabitants in total. The villagers are mostly of the Buddhist faith, and, thus, you’ll come across small Gompas (the one in Urgos is stunning!) as you explore the valley.

The trek offers stunning views of the vast pastures, wildflower grasslands, and cold glacial streams. It’s a perfect place to explore during the spring and fall months when the weather is mild, and the surroundings are at their most beautiful. The Gaddis, a shepherd tribe, graze their flocks here in the late summer. And if you’re lucky, you might catch a cricket match in the vast meadows.

There are also 15 to 20 snow-covered peaks to see. The valley is known for its medicinal plants, herbs, and the full range of Himalayan high altitude flora in the meadows. The valley is home to diverse wildlife, including the Himalayan brown bear and snow leopard. Miyar is also a popular spot for bird watching, as it is home to many different types of migratory birds.

Near the snout of the Miyar Glacier, at Phalpu, you’ll find yourself in the Kesar Yon Chhaap, seven sacred pools. These pools are revered in the Buddhist culture and are said to bring prosperity and prayers. You are allowed to bathe in them for a feeling of deep spiritual cleansing.

And if you’re up for a challenge, you can even take a dip in the icy cold lakes near Kesar Yon Chhaap.

Kesar Yon Chhaap, located near the end of the long Miyar glacier, is a particularly idyllic spot to set up camp, surrounded as it is by hidden lakes.

The Miyar Valley is home to some of the most revered peaks in the world, including Never Seen Tower and Castle Peak. These awe-inspiring mountains are located just a few kilometres from the Miyar Glacier.

If you’re looking for an escape to the wilderness, Himachal Pradesh’s Miyar Valley is the perfect destination. With its wild grasses, rushing river, and roaming horses and sheep, the valley offers a glimpse of untamed nature. For those who thirst for adventure and want to explore the hidden side of themselves, the Miyar Valley is the perfect place to let loose and find peace all at once.

Miyar Valley Trek Itinerary

Day 1Drive from Manali to Udaipur

Distance: 109km

Time Taken: 3.5 hrs via Attal Tunnel

Altitude: 6,725 ft to 9,000 ft

The Miyar Valley is a beautiful, secluded area in the Lahaul region of Himachal Pradesh. The Atal Tunnel is a gateway to two different worlds – the lush green hills of Kullu and the stark, arid landscape of Lahaul. The contrast between Lahaul and Kullu is stark, and the Atal tunnel allows you to experience both sides of Himachal Pradesh.

Lahaul is known for its mystic beauty, and you can see famous sights such as the Triloknath temple and Tandi, where the Chandra and Bhaga rivers meet. This location gives the city its nickname, “City of Two Rivers”. You’ll pass through steeply folded mountains and loose sedimentary rocks as you drive alongside the Chenab river.

Lahaul is home to local farmers who grow delicious iceberg lettuce and other food crops. The highlight of the journey is undoubtedly the Sissu waterfall, which is a sight to behold.

Spend a night in Udaipur to relax and acclimatize before exploring the valley. Udaipur city got its name from Raja Udai Singh Chamba. The city is located at the junction of the Chandra and Bhaga rivers. Udaipur is the headquarters of Lahaul’s sub-divisional headquarters. The city is a popular tourist destination due to its scenic beauty and unique culture.

You won’t be disappointed by the stunning scenery and tranquil atmosphere of this hidden gem.

Day 2Drive from Udaipur to Shukto. Trek to Doksa

Distance: Drive distance: 21.6 km;  Trek distance: 2 km

Time Taken: Drive: 50min; Trek: 1-1.5 hours

Altitude: 9,000 ft to 12,080 ft

Miyar Valley is located a short drive from Udaipur and is home to 13 villages. Once you reach Shukto by road, you’re starting your journey off in earnest!

The trail starts from Shukto and leads to the village of Doksa, which can be accessed by crossing the suspension bridge suspended above the Miyar Nala.

Each of these villages has its own culture and traditions.

The best time to visit is during the summer months when the weather is mild and perfect for exploring the area. The locals mainly grow iceberg lettuce and seed potatoes, but there are also a variety of other vegetables and medicinal plants that can be found in the region. Kuth (Saucerrea Lapa) and Mannu (Innu Racemosa) are two of the most popular medicinal plants that are used by the villagers.

The trail begins at Shukto with a series of switchbacks, winding through the beautiful farms that dot the landscape. It’s said that there is a stream of crystal-clear water not far from this spot and that locals often come here to play cricket in the open meadow.

This region is also home to many towering rockfaces, which have attracted the attention of rock climbers from all over. The campsite at Doksa offers incredible views of Menthosa, Lahaul’s second-highest peak. This stunning mountain is known as the crowning jewel of Miyar valley, and it’s easy to see why.

Day 3Shukto to Yolithang

Distance: 7.5 km
Time Taken: 5-6 hrs
Altitude: 12,080 ft to 12,390 ft

Today’s trail takes us through a charming village with picturesque farmlands. You’re about to cross a bridge that will take you over a river. If you look to your right, you’ll also see a cricket field. The path starts by going down and then crossing the bridge. The trail will then ascend, and you’ll be crossing lovely juniper trees. For the most part, the trail is well-defined.

You will descend into a valley with charming juniper shrubs. For about 20 minutes, you will descend steeply towards the stupa. Thanpattan is the name of the region that starts from the stupa. This lovely trek will give you a taste of true village life!

The trail meanders through meadows and rocky mountain ranges, with views of the Tharang massif in the distance. As you pass by the Tharang basecamp, keep an eye out for the beautiful purple lupins that grow in the area. The trail is a great place to spend the afternoon playing games with friends, with the majestic mountains providing a stunning backdrop.

Evenings are even more special, as the mountains change colour in the light of the setting sun. You will also see different phases of the landscape as you progress on the trail.

Your stay for the night is in Yolithang, which has a nearby water crossing, contributing to its unique charm.

Day 4Yolithang to Zardong

Distance: 12km

Time Taken: 6-7 hrs

Altitude: 12780 ft

Today you’ll be experiencing a mix of easy and challenging terrain as you hike through an open valley with beautiful views of the Miyar River. After a short, easy walk, you will descend to a bridge that crosses the river. Following the bridge, there is a steep climb to reach the Gompa. A little further ahead, you’ll come across a hut near the Gompa lake – be sure to fill up your water supplies here!

After the hut, you will descend again into a flat meadow area for a short break. The Gompa is the place named after some Lamas who used to meditate nearby. There is no real shrine here, but the peaceful atmosphere makes it a special place for meditation.

As you make your way through the rocky terrain and a section of boulders, be prepared for a few challenges. There are multiple ascends and descends, and some areas require you to walk over edges. Make sure to take your time and be careful as you make your way through this section.

Finally, you reach the river. It’s a well-earned break after the tough journey through the boulders. The river is wide and majestic, with sandy shores and gushing waters. As you walk along with it, you’re surrounded by beautiful flowers. It’s a stunning sight to behold!

The vast meadows below are a sight to behold, with edelweiss and catmint carpeting the ground. It’s not unusual to see Himalayan Griffins or Lammergeyers soaring overhead.

The day will be spent surrounded by beautiful flowers in bloom. If you’re planning on visiting in the late summer or early fall, you’ll be able to see the Blue poppy in all its glory. However, if you want to see a variety of wildflowers, June or July are the best months to visit.

The ascent is gradual and easy, making it perfect for anyone looking for a leisurely trek. As you make your way up the trail, you’ll cross the Gumba Nala and continue following the Miyar Nalla. Tonight’s destination is the magnificent Zardong campsite, which offers stunning views of the night sky. This is sure to be a day (and night) you won’t soon forget!

Day 5Zardong to Phalpu

Distance: 7km
Time Taken: 3-4 hrs
Altitude: 13010 ft

Today’s 15 KM journey is mostly a level walk by the river. There are several idyllic spots on the trail to take a break, enjoy the views and feel at one with nature. The river is wider than usual here, and it is a very calming experience. Don’t forget to spend some time here!

The path ahead is filled with large boulders, so you’ll need to be careful as you cross. One of the most iconic places en route today is Chhudong, which is a massive meadow. This amazing meadow is located next to the river, and it’s definitely a sight to see! The beautiful scenery makes it the perfect place to relax and take in the fresh air.

The Chhudong valley is a magnificent granite valley with a beautiful area that offers plenty of opportunities for exploration and adventure. The Takdung glacier faces Southwest, and the Pima la glacier sits on the opposite side of the Miyar River.
