Sar Pass Trek Itinerary

Day 1Kasol to Grahan

Distance: 10 km
Time Taken: 5 hours
Kasol Altitude: 1,600 m (5,250 ft)
Grahan Altitude: 2,310 m (7,580 ft)

Our trek starts from Kasol, a quaint village filled with cafes and guesthouses that offer a relaxing atmosphere. You’ll meet your guide and trek leader once you reach the designated meeting point and your trek leader will brief you regarding your trek, the itinerary, and the do’s and don’ts.

You’ll then start your trek for Grahan which is about 10 km away from Kasol. We will trek through forests, following the Grahan nalah, which is a marked trail that starts from the center of Kasol and keeps to the true left of the nalah. This trail is frequently used by villagers and, with a gentle gradient, we can effortlessly cover much distance in a matter of hours.

The trail crosses the nalah and continues towards the right bank of the river, before abruptly becoming rocky and climbing uphill. Although one may be led to believe that this is not the right path, it is important not to go astray.

As we trek higher, the trees give way to grass and shrubs. You will be amazed by the beautiful scenery of the fields and bright-colored tarpaulins. These are makeshift stalls with vendors offering refreshments like tea, omelets, and rhododendron syrup!

Rhododendrons, locally known as buras, grow in forests that receive snowfall. Their bright red flowers bloom in spring and are collected to make syrup. Rhododendron petals can be eaten whole, and the syrup mixed with water to make a refreshing drink.

After a steep climb of about an hour, look out for the village of Grahan, situated on top of a hill. It is breathtakingly beautiful to see the village amidst nature’s magnificence. We will be staying at Grahan for the night at a beautiful campsite near the village.

The campsite offers incredible views of the valley and a fantastic way to end the day! You will be provided tents and sleeping bags if needed, and you can spend time exploring Grahan or simply take in the views with a hot cup of chai.

Day 2Grahan to Min Thach

Distance: 7 km
Time Taken: 6 hours
Min Thach Altitude: 3,200 m (10,500 ft)

Today, we will trek to the beautiful meadow of Min Thach, a scenic route that awaits your arrival.

After indulging in a hearty breakfast at the Grahan campsite, we’ll begin our journey north along the trail toward Min Thach. As you trek, take in the awe-inspiring mountain views that begin to open up before you, providing an unforgettable experience.

The trail may become confusing at times, but don’t worry as your experienced guide will lead you every step of the way. After a few hours of trekking through lush forests, the terrain will lead to a grassy ridge that opens up into the beautiful clearing of Min Thach, where locals traditionally graze their cattle.

Here at Min Thach, you’re surrounded by breathtaking views of the evergreen forest on the southeast side and the Chanderkhani and its adjoining mountain ranges on the northwest. This is also a great place to grab a cup of tea or coffee from seasonal vendor stalls while enjoying the potable water from a nearby tap.

Furthermore, Min Thach provides an excellent campsite due to the ridge’s protection from strong winds, which allows you to relax and unwind comfortably overnight. You’ll be afforded the opportunity to take in stunning sunset and sunrise views in this enchanting landscape.

After a satisfying hot dinner at our charming campsite, you’ll retire to your tent, contently falling asleep to the natural sounds of the wildlife.

Day 3Min Thatch to Nagaru

Distance: 8 km
Time Taken: 6 hours
Nagaru Altitude: 3,800 m (12,467 ft)

The trek from Min Thach to Nagaru is an adventure you don’t want to miss. While Nagaru doesn’t appear too far away, the path isn’t straight. Instead, it twists and turns through the woods to take you up toward the south. Depending on when you visit, you may encounter patches of snow on the trail, so it’s best to start early. The weather generally remains favorable up until noon, after which it can be unpredictable.

After walking through forests for some time, you’ll approach another rocky ridge overlooking a meadow. Take the left path, and it becomes increasingly steep. Ascend the cliff to reach the campsite at Nagaru. The well-marked trail through the grassy patches is clear, but be extra cautious if there’s snow on the trail. In these conditions, waterproof gloves and a trekking pole can be helpful. Make sure to follow your guide’s instructions to avoid any mishaps.

As you trek through varied terrains for the next few hours, you’ll eventually arrive at a flatland on top of a hill: Nagaru. The beauty of this place will leave you awestruck! The majestic mountains rising from the Parvati Valley down below on the northern side, the magnificent Chanderkheni Ranges, and the Beas Valley’s greenery all add up to create a picture-perfect scene. Looking leftwards, you can have a bird’s-eye view of Min Thach and Grahan village, while the vast expanse of snow up to the mountains spreads out on your south. This is the direction you will trek next to reach Sar Pass.

Nagaru can be windy, so it’s best to set up camp as soon as you arrive. The temperature drops quite quickly after dark, so make sure you have appropriate warm layers to protect yourself from the cold. After an early dinner, retire to your tent to avoid the stronger winds at night. Get a good night’s sleep, as the next day, you’ll make your summit to Sar Pass.

Day 4Nagaru to Biskeri Thatch via Sar Pass

Distance: 14 km
Time Taken: 8 hours
Sar Pass Altitude: 4,220 m (13,845 ft)
Biskeri Thatch Altitude: 3,400 m (11,155 ft)

Today is the most challenging and rewarding day of your trekking experience. On this leg, you’ll make a summit to Sar Pass as you climb up to its maximum height of 4,220 m (13,845 ft). The trail is steep in places with perilous drops that may intimidate some. However, it’s important not to rush and take it slow. Make sure you always have a firm grip on the rocks, especially when traversing across small ridges.

Walking on the snow is comparatively easier, as your feet sink in and offer a better grip. If you have trekking poles, they come in handy here. The ascending trail takes you through some beautiful meadows of wildflowers, offering some stunning views along the way.

The summit of Sar Pass is at its peak during the early hours of the day when it’s still sunny. Once you reach the top of Sar Pass, your hard work will be rewarded with a mesmerizing view. The gorgeous mountains surround you and stretch out as far as the eye can see. A flag tied to a Trishul marks your arrival at the summit, and photos of this moment will always be cherished. The beautiful peaks of Tosh Valley greet you in the east, while snow-ensconced mountain peaks can be seen to the south.

There’s also a frozen lake at the top of Sar Pass, which remains frozen until late summer. This is where the pass derives its name from — ‘Sar’ meaning ‘lake. Take some time to soak at this moment and then head downwards towards Biskeri Thatch.

The descent from the pass is quite steep so it’s important to watch your step. You’ll need to stay focused and take plenty of breaks. The trail leads you through paths that are sometimes covered in snow. Traverse them carefully and follow your guide’s instructions. You’ll be amazed to see the variety of terrain and beauty on your way down.

Your destination for the day — Biskeri Thatch — is a flatland in front of Biskeri village. The descent takes about eight hours, and you’ll probably reach here before sunset.

We’ll be setting up camp here, so get ready to relish a hot meal and spend the night in your tents. The campsite offers stunning views of Parvati Valley to the north and Kullu Valley to the east, making it perfect for some stargazing before you retire for the night. Let the sound of nature relax you as you drift off to sleep.

Day 5Biskeri Thach to Barshaini & Barshaini to Kasol

Distance: 10 km
Time Taken: 5 hours
Barshaini Altitude: 2,200 m (7,220 ft)
Kasol Altitude: 1,600 m (5,250 ft)

Today’s trek is comparatively easier than the previous days with a gradual descent. The trail will take you away from the snow-covered mountains and through lush green forests, before finally leading you back to civilization.

The trek starts with a steep climb down from Biskeri Thatch towards the valley below. The path is quite slippery in some places, so watch your step and take it slow. This trail winds its way down toward the valley floor, passing through a plot of land with fencing on both sides of it. Cross the stream and keep right to find the trail again.

This is where the scenic beauty of Parvati Valley begins to reveal itself. The path winds through dense forests and rolling landscapes, so be sure to take plenty of pictures. Look out for spectacular views of meadows and snow-capped mountain peaks along the way.

After five hours of walking, you’ll finally reach the village of Barshaini. Stop here for a quick bite and soak in the views of the mountains all around you. From here, it’s a short 40-minute drive to the village of Kasol.

Kasol is located in the heart of Parvati Valley and is a great place for some much-needed rest and relaxation after your trekking journey. Explore its bustling market or take a dip in the hot springs — whatever you choose to do, Kasol has something for everyone.
