Kashmir Great Lakes Trek Itinerary

Day 1Arrival in Sonamarg

Sonamarg is the base camp for the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek. Once you reach Sonamarg, you will meet your trek leader, guide, and staff who will be with you throughout your trek.

In the evening, have some tasty tea and snacks. You will be briefed by your trek leader on the same evening.

We will be camping in a meadow near Sonamarg for the night, and starting our trek the next day.

Day 2Sonamarg to Nichnai (10 Km / 6 Hours)

We’ll be starting our Kashmir Great Lakes trek today. Before that, we will be waking up early and stretching our muscles before having breakfast and starting the trek.

The first day of the trek includes trekking through maple, pine, and bhoj forests, and along a water stream. Once you start the trek, you will reach a flat top known as Table Top, after an hour of ascending. Take a break here, and eat some Maggi or have snacks at the Dhaba.

After crossing Table Top, we’ll keep ascending to the top of the ridge. After that, you will start descending to the other side. We’ll be walking alongside the stream from there.

Today is the first day of the trek so we’ll be taking it easy and taking several breaks so you can catch your breath and acclimatize properly. We’ll be having our lunch alongside the stream.

From the lunch point, it is a gradual trek up to the Nichnai campsite, where we will be camping for the night.

Day 3Nichnai to Vishansar via Nachnai Pass (11 km/ 6 Hours)

Today we will be crossing the first pass of the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek i.e. Nichnai Pass.

After starting from the Nichnai campsite, we will be crossing a stream or a snow bridge (depending on the snow conditions) and start ascending up to the pass. The pass is visible from the campsite, and it is a gradual ascent up to the pass. Above all, keep walking and stay hydrated throughout your trek.

Once you reach the pass, you will see that there is a Dhaba at the top of the pass. Take a break and rest. Moreover, you can have snacks from the Dhaba.

At the Nichnai Pass, you will even find a calling network. So, you can call your loved ones from the top of the pass. How amazing is that?

We will start descending after spending some time at the pass. The rest of the day is easy. You will descend down from the pass, and keep walking on flat ground, and through beautiful meadows. We will have our lunch next to a stream we will have to cross.

After having lunch, keep walking through vast meadows to reach the Vishansar campsite. Vishansar is a vast campsite. Moreover, you may even say some of our staff playing cricket or volleyball on the meadows. So, you can join them to stay active. We will be staying at the campsite for the night.

We will attempt to reach Vishansar by afternoon, so we can visit Vishansar Lake in the evening.

Day 4Vishansar lake to Gadsar via Gadsar Pass ( 14 km / 10 Hours)

We’ll be waking up early today because we have to cross the highest pass of the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek i.e. Gadsar Pass. We will attempt to cross the pass as early as possible in the day because the weather in the mountains becomes unstable during the afternoons.

Crossing Gadsar Pass is one of the main challenges of the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek but the view from the top is the most rewarding. You will be crossing the twin lakes – Vishansar Lake and Kishansar Lake on the way to the Gadsar Pass. The view of both these lakes will remain with you up to the pass. It is a steep ascent up to the Gadsar Pass.

Once you reach the pass, take a break, drink water, and have your refreshments. Don’t forget to enjoy the amazing view on both sides of the pass. We will start descending after spending some time at the top of the pass. The descend after the pass is a bit risky, especially if there’s soft and melting snow. So, be careful and descend slowly.

After reaching the base of the pass, the trail becomes gradual. We will be walking towards Gadsar Lake. After reaching Gadsar Lake, notice how the water is emerald blue. Have your lunch next to the lake.

It is a long trek, and the longest day of the whole trek. When you reach the campsite, have hot tea, snacks, rest, and stretch your muscles.

We’ll be staying at the Gadsar campsite today.

Day 5Gadsar Lake to Satsar Lake (11,482 ft ) - ( 12 km / 6 Hours)

Today is the shortest day of the whole trek. We’ll be having breakfast and start our trek. You start from your campsite with a short steep trek up the trail. The trail eventually becomes gradual and traverses the mountains.

After some time, the trail becomes steep but keep walking consistently and you should be alright. The most amazing thing about today’s trail is you can spot Mt. Nanga Parbat from this trail. After reaching close to the ridge, the trail starts traversing the mountain and becomes gradual again. It’s an easy gradual walk from here.

You will enter another valley on your left, cross the stream, and keep walking towards one of the Satsar Lakes. Satsar, as the name suggests, includes seven lakes spread closely around the Satsar campsite. We’ll be exploring three of the seven Satsar Lakes. The other lakes are hardly accessible.

We’ll be staying at the Satsar campsite for the night.

Day 6 Satsar Lake to Nundkol

Today, we will be crossing the third and the last pass of the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek, Jaj Pass.

When you start from the campsite, you’ll be walking steeply towards the trail. Keep following the trail and you will reach the infamous boulder area of this particular day. There are huge boulders so you will need to be careful and mindful while trekking. Above all, be ready to use all four limbs if need be to cross the boulder area.

Once you cross the boulders, you will reach the ridge from where the climb to the Jaj Pass is gradual. You will be crossing water streams and snow bridges on the way to the pass.

When you reach the pass, take a moment to appreciate the views of the valleys on both sides. You’ll be rewarded with views of the Gangabal and Nundkol lakes on the other side. These lakes are often covered by notorious clouds so be thankful if you get to see the views. You may also be able to spot your campsite from the pass.

Spend some time at the pass and start descending to the other side. It is a steep descend so be careful. When it rains, the path becomes really slippery and the descend becomes hard. Once you reach the base, you will have to gradually climb for 20 minutes, then descend to reach the campsite next to Nundkol Lake.

We will be exploring both Gangabal and Nundkol Lake tomorrow.

Day 7Exploring Gangabal Lake and Nundkol Lake

This day is for exploring both Gangabal and Nundkol Lake at leisure. Gangabal is the largest of all lakes in the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek.

So, take your time and explore as much of it as you can. People from Kashmir and Naranag even come and spend their weekends fishing and camping on the shores of this lake. So, it is a little crowded than all the other lakes and yet is big enough that you can find your own spot and meditate for hours.

Moreover, this extra day in Advenchar’s Kashmir Great Lakes Trek itinerary is just so people can spend an extra day just to enjoy nature and feel at peace without having to worry about trekking or reaching any destination for a day and just live in the moment.

Day 8Nundkol to Naranag

Today is the last day of the trek, and you will be descending the whole way down to Naranag. It is a long and steep descent so you will need to be careful (especially if it’s raining or the weather is bad).

During the descent, there are Dhabas on the way so you can take breaks in between your trek and refresh yourselves.

Finally, once you reach Naranag, say goodbye to your trek leaders and trek mates. It is sure to be an emotional moment for everyone.

Day 9Buffer Day

We keep a buffer day in our pass-crossing treks or long treks because of the many hurdles we might face. For example, bad weather (heavy snowfall, or rain). Therefore, it becomes risky to cross the pass or to carry on trekking.

However, it must be a unanimous decision to use the buffer day. All the participants will be required to pay 2,500/- INR (exclusive of 5% GST) if the group decides to use the buffer day. The amount will be collected by your trek leader in cash.

I completed the Kashmir Great Lakes trek in August ’22 with Advenchar and I had an amazing experience! Swena and her team were incredible throughout, and were very professional. I loved their safety-first approach, and that helped us complete the trek safely in spite of bad weather. The team is knowledgeable, polite and helpful.

Additionally, the small group that we were part of made the experience even better.
I would definitely plan another trek with them!

I’ve travelled with Advenchar to the Kashmir Great Lakes trek. I must say it was an absolutely fantastic experience! Or trek leader, Swena, was super experienced and was key to our trek. Despite the tumultuous weather, the helpers were around everyday and set up camps, made food, and guided us throughout.
Additionally, I had great fun with my trek mates, considering it was a small group. We found time to play cards and other games.
Overall, I couldn’t have asked for anything better than what I’ve experienced with Advenchar.

As I was trekking for the first time especially in mountainous regions I was not familiar with many of the things to be taken care of yet I finished my trek very nicely. Thank you the Advenchar team for their support.
