Kedarkantha (a very popular winter trek) is very often confused with the holy Kedarnath Trek. This is why I’m writing this Kedarnath vs Kedakantha blog.

Many people get confused but these two treks are very different from each other. Kedarkantha is very popular among the trekkers, whereas Kedarnath is part of the Char Dham Yatra, and is considered holy.

Both Kedarkantha and Kedarnath share similarities in their name, and they sometimes create confusion among the trekkers. However, after reading this article, you’ll understand the difference and can explain it to others as well.

Kedarnath Trek

Kedarnath is a pilgrimage and is part of the Char Dham Yatra. The pilgrimage starts from Gaurikund, in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. The main attraction is the Kedarnath temple, which is situated at an altitude of 11,755 ft. Read more about Kedarnath here.

How are Kedarnath and Kedarkantha Different?

1. Location

Both Kedarnath and Kedarkantha Trek are in Uttarakhand, yes! But Kedarnath starts from Gaurikund, and Kedarkantha Trek starts from Sankri, Uttarakhand.

2. Season

Kedarkantha Trek is open for all and in all seasons. Most people prefer to trek in the winter because snow is the main attraction in Kedarkantha. But if you do not like the cold, then you can go in the summer and enjoy the greenery and the beautiful meadows.
However, for the Kedarnath temple, the doors of the temple are open from May to November every year. You may have to register and plan your travels according to the dates every year.

3. Altitude

Kedarkantha is a peak and it reaches an altitude of 12,500 ft. whereas Kedarnath temple is at an altitude of 11,755 ft.

4. Main Attraction

The main attraction of Kedarkantha is its beautiful landscape and meadows, and as it is open for the whole year, you can enjoy both snow and greenery. Most people choose Kedarkantha because of the summit climb.
Whereas, the main attraction of Kedarnath is the Kedarnath temple and its religious significance.

5. Distance

Kedarkantha is an approximately 20 km trek from Sankri and back. Whereas Kedarnath is a 16 km trek from Gaurikund one way.
But, since you have to gain more altitude in Kedarkantha Trek, it is advised to complete the trek in 3 days from Sankri. For Kedarnath, you can complete the trek in 2 days.

    Well written. Just a point . Kedarnath is not only famous for its temple but for mountain lovers, it’s an absolutely delightful trek with lovely towering views of the peaks. I didn’t go as part of yatra, no temple visit, but enjoyed the view thoroughly.
